Business Partners Make a Difference!

Strong business and community partnerships are fostering meaningful experiences for the students of the Poway Unified School District. With business and community support, we can continue to implement the many programs and activities that develop the necessary skills to prepare students for their future.

Expo

SAN DIEGO FESTIVAL OF SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING EXPO DAY AT PETCO PARK

Students from Poway High School's Science Olympiad Team joined students from Twin Peaks and Oak Valley Middle Schools as they participated at the San Diego Festival of Science and Engineering Day at EXPO Day at PETCO Park.   Booth exhibits and demonstrations included the science of forensics "Balloon Fingerprints" , creating "Model Rockets", and "Potential and Kinetic Energy."  The Fair was attended by over 27,000 community members.  A great day to celebrate STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math)!

SALK INSTITUTE MOBILE LAB AT BLACK MOUNTAIN MIDDLE SCHOOL ACADEMY

Sincere appreciation to Salk Institute Mobile Lab for their recent visit to Black Mountain Middle School Academy. Over a three-day period students learned about Biotechnology. The Mobile Lab arrived equipped with supplies, microscopes, and all the tools to demonstrate the wonders of science and DNA. Scientists, graduate students and volunteers presented the lessons using interactive and hands-on experiments.

WOMEN IN ENGINEERING DAYS

Over 160 middle school girls attended a Women in Engineering Day at Lockheed Martin, Sony, and HP to become more aware of careers in engineering. The day was filled with listening to inspiring women in the engineering field, participating in hands-on activities, and touring industry. This experience provided an insight to careers in engineering and a glimpse of the workplace. Students were encouraged to pursue their dreams and reach for the stars…the future is theirs!

BizTOWN

FIFTH GRADE STUDENTS - JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT's BIZTOWN

Thank You to our business partners and community organizations for sponsoring our fifth grade students to attend a day at Junior Achievement’s BizTown. This valuable and exciting field trip follows a five-week in-class curriculum preparing students to operate a business in the simulated community of BizTown. Special thanks to Balfour Beatty Construction, Kiwanis Club of Poway, Mission Federal Credit Union, Northrop Grumman Corporation, Poway Honda, PUSD Retired Classified Employees Group, and Teradata.

JA COMPANY PROGRAM – The Next Big Thing: Inspire Tomorrow’s Entrepreneurs Today

Congratulations to the five high school student companies within Poway Unified School District who ran successful businesses this year in the JA Company Program.  Thirteen student businesses compete to be named The Student Company of the Year. Taking this honor was RevampTshirts.  Congratulations also to Food Friendzy, one of the finalist teams selected to compete at the Junior Achievement USA National Student Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C., June 16-19, 2014. These teams are the best and brightest and represent nearly 40,000 students engaged in JA's high school entrepreneurship education experiences from across the country.
JA Company Program Student Businesses from Westview High School included Capped Cause (stainless steel, reusable, customizable water bottles), Food Friendzy (connecting San Diego food trucks with local events), RevampTshirts (customized pocket tees with any original artwork, design, or picture on the pocket), and Social Swell (promotion of  small local businesses to make them well known in the community).  Abraxas High School was represented by AquaSweets (providing breakfast food and vending service to students).
