Poway Unified School District applies no rule concerning a student's actual or potential parental, family, or marital status that treats students differently on the basis of sex. PUSD does not exclude or deny any student from any educational program or activity solely on the basis of pregnancy, childbirth, false pregnancy, termination of pregnancy, or recovery there from. Pregnant students and parenting students are not excluded from participation in their regular school programs or required to participate in pregnant-student programs or alternative education programs.
Pregnant and parenting students who opt for an alternative educational setting may attend Poway Unified School District's Teen Parent Program located at Poway High School. This program allows students to attend school with their babies and complete their coursework either through traditional classroom instruction or independent study. The programs, activities and courses are equal to those offered in the regular program. Poway Unified School District treats pregnancy, childbirth, false pregnancy, termination of pregnancy, and recovery there from in the same manner and under the same policies as any other temporary disability.
The same curriculum that is required and used in the traditional schools is used in the Teen Parent Program based upon:
Students meet one-on-one with a credentialed teacher during regularly scheduled weekly appointments. New Directions individualized learning plans are prepared and require independent completion.
Students work on 1-2 lessons at a time. Students may also take classes not offered by New Directions such as physical education, advanced math, and science labs on the Poway High School campus.
The ultimate goal is to continue the education of these young men and women and prepare them and their children for success in school and society.
