PUSD Student Calendar

All visitors to our campus must check in through the Administration Office at the front of the school.

Please take a few minutes at home to carefully check your child’s health before he/she leaves for school each morning. The following are a few suggestions, which may help to guide you:

~Illness during the night
~Fever is present (100 degrees or greater)
~Complaints of nausea, upset stomach, vomiting, headache, diarrhea prior to leaving for school
~Development of a rash on face and/or body
~Has a severe cold, cough and/or sore throat
~Has inflamed eye(s) with discharge from them

Please Remember: An ill child cannot function properly in the classroom. The spread of illness and disease through class or school can be more easily monitored if sick children remain at home during the acute stage of an illness. If the school health tech detects any of the above, your child will be sent home.

People with influenza-like illness are to remain home until at least 24 hours after they are free of fever (100o F [37.8o C]) without the use of fever-reducing  medications.

Additionally, students must be free of vomiting and diarrhea for 24 hours before they can return to school.

A student’s absence should be reported on the School Absence Hotline by calling: (858) 485-0042 x4202.

If you would like to request homework for your child's absence, please email their teacher directly.

Notes from the Principal

  • Peanut/Tree Nut Lunch Table: If your student sits at our nut free table, please make sure that you don’t pack anything containing peanuts or tree nuts in their lunches!

  • Lunch Money: Please make sure that your child has lunch money in his or her account if you would like them to buy lunch; we cannot lend money to students. You can drop off cash or check in the Chaparral office, or you can pay with a credit card by setting up an account at

  • Messages to Students: Please make every effort to communicate pick up instructions to your student before you drop them off each morning. This allows us to keep classroom distractions to a minimum. If something unforeseen happens and you need a message sent to your student, please give the office as much time as possible; we are unable to leave the office and personally deliver messages, and it is often difficult to reach classrooms by phone at the end of the day.

  • Volunteering on Campus: Please keep in mind that before you can volunteer on campus, you need to have a Megan’s Law background check completed and we must have a current, negative TB test on file. Please contact Mrs. Coffman ( if you have any questions.

New PUSD Program
Poway has created a fabulous new district-wide program for all the elementary schools. Thirteen times a year (once or twice a month), a team of highly qualified and trained Poway teachers will arrive at Chaparral to teach grade-level lessons in P.E., visual and performing arts, STEM, and coding. The X-Ploration student time will be an hour and 45 minutes with the X-ploration teacher while the Creekside teachers are released to collaborate in grade level teams. The time with the X-Ploration teacher will begin in the regular classroom and then different activities will take the students to the field, MPR, and/or computer lab. Your child will get to know his/her X-Ploration teacher because each teacher is assigned to a specific classroom for the whole year.

Why this new program?
Meet District LCAP goals in…
1. Supporting high quality teachers in their implementation of standards-based curriculum, instruction, and assessments
2. Create systems and structures that provide multiple pathways of learning and engagement…
3. Strengthen and maintain a safe, healthy, positive and attractive learning environment for all learners.
4. Increase parent and student engagement in learning through involvement in the education of our students.
5. Develop, implement, and embed collaboration learning structure and system for adults and students to increase student achievement.

Eleven of Chaparral’s X-Ploration Days will be on a Thursday and two on a Monday. Our first one is Monday, August 29.

School Site Council
Each public school has a School Site Council which is comprised of both school personnel and parents. The purpose of the Council is to review school goals based on school data and allocate the funds necessary to support the goals. This is a wonderful opportunity for parents who are interested in learning about the infrastructure that supports our children’s education. The Council meets 4-6 times during the school year from 8:15 am to 9:00 am. Our first meeting for the 2016-2017 school year will be on Thursday, September 22.

Currently we have one parent position open which is a two year term. If you are interested in serving on Chaparral’s School Site Council, please submit a brief paragraph (100 word max) by Friday, September 2, to Mrs. Buhr ( that states why you would like to be considered. Please put “ School Site Council” as the subject of your email. These submissions will be put out to the community for a vote.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me at
