As I shared at last week’s Friday Flag assembly, I notified our school community that we were sent a proclamation from our California Assembly member Brian Maienschein’s office congratulating our school for being ranked one of the Top 100 elementary schools in the state of California.
Parents, plan on attending our next PTA/Foundation General Association Meeting next Thursday evening April 28th beginning at 7:00 pm. Our PTA will be sharing information on their budget, and they will be electing our next executive board for the 2016-2017 school year. Our Foundation will provide an update on proceeds garnered from “Putting on the Ritz - Night at the Ranch”. I will also be there to discuss school issues. Prior to this meeting beginning at 6:00 pm this meeting, our TK and Kindergarten teachers will be discussing their programs for our incoming students for the fall of 2016.
Parents, thank you so much for supporting your child’s reading during the spring Principal’s Reading Challenge. The challenge ends Friday, April 29. It is my hope that every student at Del Sur meets or exceeds their individual goal. Students that ascertained their goal will be invited to a special assembly in May. Additionally, our top readers in each grade level will be celebrated at an upcoming Friday Flag celebration.
Currently, our third through fifth grade classrooms are preparing for this year’s new state computerized testing program called CAASPP – California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress/SBAC – Smarter Balanced Assessment System. The CAASPP/SBAC program requires all school districts throughout the state to annually use computerized tests to assess the achievement of students in the areas of reading, mathematics, and language arts. Our students will be taking these assessments during the weeks of April 25 to May 27.
Please see your teacher’s bulletins for specific testing dates for your child’s class. Additionally, all fifth grade students also take a paper and pencil multiple choice California Standards Science test specifically aligned with their current course of study.
Absenteeism during the test period can create problems for some students. Those who miss testing sessions with their regular class will be given make-up sessions in supervised small group settings. However, most students prefer to take the test along with their classmates.
At Del Sur, we feel that our students are well prepared to do quite well on these assessments. Thank you in advance for getting your children in bed early on the evenings before testing and also making sure that they have a good breakfast as well.

Slate of Officers for 2016-2017
The Del Sur Elementary PTA Nominating Committee has slated the following members for consideration for the 2016-17 PTA Board of Directors. Elections will take place at the PTA General Association meeting on Thursday, April 28, 2016 at 7 p.m. in the MPR. All PTA members are invited to attend this meeting to vote for next year’s officers. Any PTA member may run for any office and be nominated from the floor at this meeting if they are interested.

Student Council & Del Norte High School’s Fight Against Hunger Fundraiser
Egg Hunt/Movie Night 4/29
The Del Sur Student Council is teaming up with The Fight Against Hunger Club from Del Norte High School to raise funds to help provide non-perishable meals locally and globally.
The Fight Against Hunger Club is partnering with Friends & Family Community Connection (FFCC), a nonprofit 501(c) 3 community organization, whose purpose is to provide resources to help meet the needs of families and individuals locally and globally. Through partnerships with schools, community, and faith-based organizations, FFCC provides early intervention programs for at-risk and underprivileged families and individuals. The food itself will be packaged at a food-packaging event at Del Norte next school year.
To raise funds for this cause, two Egg Hunts will be held at Del Sur on Friday, April 29th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. PK - 1st grade @ 6:00 and 2nd - 5th grade @6:45. Tickets for the Egg Hunt will be $5 each. Once the tickets are gone, they are gone. Buy early so your child does not miss out on the fun. They will be on sale after school during the week of April 25th.
In-between Egg Hunts, Student Council will be showing a G rated movie and the Del Norte students will be running a snack bar. All money earned through the egg hunt ticket sales and snack bar will go to the Fight Against Hunger Fundraiser.

Heritage Night 2016!
“It’s time for Del Sur’s 2nd Annual Heritage Night scheduled for May 20th 6-8pm! Our first year’s event was a wonderful success! We are looking for more volunteers to make this year’s even better than the first. We need your help!
Our community is made up of people from many different parts of the world! At Del Sur we have over 15 different languages and cultures represented among our student population. Heritage Night is a special event where students and families can share and celebrate their customs and traditions through literature, art, music, language, and food!

Our final contest of the year is underway, as we "Race to the Finish." This is a class contest with the top three classes winning gift cards for their teachers. The contest ends Wednesday, May 25th. Thank you for all of your support this year for the contests, and good luck to all!
