Principal’s Message

August 22, 2016

Greetings Explorers,

Greetings Del Sur Explorers! We are off on our ninth year journey. It has been exciting to welcome 150 new students to our school. We have 850 students in grades TK through five and 120 students in our various preschool programs including our special education preschool program. Our school family continues to grow, and we are excited about this. I am excited to be part of this fantastic school. Your children are fortunate to be part of such a caring staff. Every day we look forward to investing in the future of all of our students. Education is the key to a successful and fulfilling life.
This summer we added twelve new competent and caring staff members to our faculty. Rachel Labadie and Nicole DiCarlo will be teaching two of our Kindergarten classes this year. Susan Jose will be teaching our K/1 multiage classroom. Luis Ortiz will be teaching third grade. Kim Muus and Rachel Sutherland will be teaching two of our fourth grade classes this year. Beau Romero and Michelle Brook will be teaching two of our fifth grade classes this year. We have a new RSP teacher. Her name is Kristin Zuidema. Our new 5th grade band and orchestra teacher is Tara Nijhowne. We have a new three day a week counselor – Rachel Scherz. Finally, with our increased enrollment, our district has granted an assistant principal this year. Her name is Lisa Wilken. We are very excited to welcome these new staff members to our school.

It was great to see everyone at our 9th annual Back to School Picnic on Friday evening! A great time was had by all. A huge thank you goes out to the Del Sur PTA for putting on this event each year. We are grateful to have such an awesome PTA!

We are very pleased with how smoothly the drop off and pick up procedure is going thus far. Remember, if you are driving through the pickup loop, please drop off and pick up your child at the double gates. Please pull all the way up to the lamp post located right by the double gates. If you are planning to park and walk to pick up your child, please meet him or her in the courtyard located under the marquee. We have a new policy to keep traffic flowing smoothly and efficiently. Between 8:10 and 8:25 in the morning and 2:50 to 3:05, when exiting the parking lot, you may only turn right or go straight when exiting onto Paseo Montenero. Thanks for helping us improve our traffic efficiency.
This coming Friday 8/26, we will start the day with our first “Friday Flag” assembly of the year. This is a short assembly that begins promptly at the beginning of the day on Friday. It is a time where the entire school comes together to salute our country, to honor fellow students, watch students perform songs, skits, and dances, and to talk about schoolwide issues. All parents are always welcome at these assemblies.

I hope to see all parents at our Back to School Night on Thursday, August 25th for parents of our first through fifth grade students. Our first through second grade teachers will be presenting information in their classroom beginning at 5:30 pm. Then at 6:20 pm our third through fifth grade teachers will be presenting their information in their classroom. This is a very important evening. Thanks for making every effort to attend. Your child’s teacher is looking forward to working together on your child’s educational journey this year. This meeting is designed for parents. If you can make other arrangements for your children on this evening, that would be very helpful and welcomed.
I am looking forward to a great school year.
