We are very pleased with how smoothly the drop off and pick up procedure is going thus far. Remember, if you are driving through the pickup loop, please drop off and pick up your child at the double gates. Please pull all the way up to the lamp post located right by the double gates. If you are planning to park and walk to pick up your child, please meet him or her in the courtyard located under the marquee. We have a new policy to keep traffic flowing smoothly and efficiently. Between 8:10 and 8:25 in the morning and 2:50 to 3:05, when exiting the parking lot, you may only turn right or go straight when exiting onto Paseo Montenero. Thanks for helping us improve our traffic efficiency.
This coming Friday 8/26, we will start the day with our first “Friday Flag” assembly of the year. This is a short assembly that begins promptly at the beginning of the day on Friday. It is a time where the entire school comes together to salute our country, to honor fellow students, watch students perform songs, skits, and dances, and to talk about schoolwide issues. All parents are always welcome at these assemblies.
I hope to see all parents at our Back to School Night on Thursday, August 25th for parents of our first through fifth grade students. Our first through second grade teachers will be presenting information in their classroom beginning at 5:30 pm. Then at 6:20 pm our third through fifth grade teachers will be presenting their information in their classroom. This is a very important evening. Thanks for making every effort to attend. Your child’s teacher is looking forward to working together on your child’s educational journey this year. This meeting is designed for parents. If you can make other arrangements for your children on this evening, that would be very helpful and welcomed.

Attention: TK Parents
The California Department of Education approved a request from PUSD to waive Education Code Section 37202(a) allowing Transitional Kindergarten (TK) students to attend school for a half day program. The waiver, # 14-3-2016-W-06, was approved at the July 13, 2016 meeting and is in effect from June 30, 2016 to June 30, 2017. The rationale behind this request rests on several points:
1. TK is intended to be the first year of a two year Kindergarten experience. PUSD believes it is in the best interest of TK students to attend school within the required number of instructional minutes for Kindergarten, which is 180 minutes, of a half day.
2. TK students participate in an intensive language arts and math curricula aligned to the California State Standards (2010) in ELA and Math. They also experience instruction in other core areas during this time, as well as support for behavioral, social and emotional development. This structure ensures that our TK students are fully prepared to meet the academic rigor in the second year of the Kindergarten sequence.
3. TK teachers in PUSD are fully credentialed educators who provide intervention and enrichment support to other primary classrooms in the afternoon portion of their daily schedule. This structure collectively reduces class size for our primary students in grades K-2, and ensures high quality teachers are working with students needing additional supports or enrichment.
Box Top Contest
Box Tops are Treasure for Del Sur Elementary!!
Welcome Back Explorers. Our first contest of the year will be an individual contest with the top 3 classes winning gift cards for their teachers. We will also be having raffle prizes that include free books and Staples Rewards for teachers.
Each class’s treasure chest will earn a jewel/coin for every 50 points by sending in their Box Tops, Sunny D, Prang Power, Tyson A++, ink cartridges and My Coke Rewards points. This contest will be a class contest, with each teacher of the top 3 classes winning a gift card. All points must be turned in by Wednesday November 4th in order to be counted. We will no longer be using collection sheets. Please submit your Box Tops, Labels for Education, Sunny D, Prang Power, My Coke Rewards points, etc… in an envelope or plastic bag. Don't forget to put your teacher’s name on the outside as well as how many items are in your bag/envelope.
REMINDER: Expired Box Tops do not count!
