RANCH ROUND-UP ~ August 19, 2016

It was a great opening!   The Posting Party, Back to School Night, and the first day went perfectly!  Don’t forget that our parking lot can be busy, and parents are responsible for keeping it safe!  The parking lot is for staff, please park on the street.  Pull all the way to the front of the drop off loop, ensuring that you are not blocking the cross walk as you exit to Eastbourne.   There is a no parking zone in front of the loop as you travel from Eastbourne to Highland Ranch Road.  This small lane allows parents to turn right into the parking lot, without blocking traffic.   NEVER CROSS THE DOUBLE YELLOW LINE to get around the cars attempting to turn in to the parking lot.  Our Safety Patrol starts Monday!  Show them the respect they deserve.   Let’s keep it safe at the Ranch!

EAR – Everyone a Reader

On Friday, September 9th, from 8:00am-11:00am we will be having a volunteer training session for this reading program, targeted to support first grade students.  A light breakfast will be provided.  During this session we will provide you with the necessary tools to better help the students as well as go over procedural elements of the program.     EAR will begin the last week of September, starting Monday September 26th and will run Mondays-Thursdays, 8:00am-9:00am.  Volunteers will be asked to give ONE HOUR on ONE DAY each week.   If you’d like to volunteer, please contact Elise Tiregol-Pala at elisetp@yahoo.com  

SING WITH THE RANCH!

Welcome back to school Stallions! Do you like to sing? Would you like to be in a show? If so, our after school chorus program is for you! The Stallion Singers meet after school on Mondays for 3rd through 5th graders and Wednesdays for K through 2nd graders. We start right after the last bell and go until 2:45. Thanks to generous support from the PTA and our parent volunteers, this program is absolutely free to all Stallions. If you'd like more information, join us at an informational meeting Monday August 22nd at 2 p.m. in the MPR. Parents are welcome to attend this meeting as well. We're looking forward to another great year of Music, friendship, and fun! PTA PICNIC AND CHILI COOK-OFF ON THUSDAY, AUGUST 25TH

Highland Ranch PTA cordially invites you and your family to our Annual Welcome Back Pot-luck and Chili Cook-off at Highland Ranch MPR/covered lunch area/playground and grass area.  The fun will be from 5:00pm-7:00pm.  Whether you want to cook and compete or just bring a dish to share and have fun with friends, it's sure to be a great night. Please bring all food to the MPR. You can eat under the covered lunch area or bring a blanket and chairs and eat out on the grass. Your choice!

Chili Cook-Off Details:  Chili Categories are Traditional, Vegetarian, and Other. Please label your chili and include an ingredient card. You can also include the recipe card if you want to share your secrets!  There will be a winner and prizes for each category. Winners will be chosen by taste tester votes. Bring your chili in a crock pot, hot. PTA will provide power strips to plug into, taster cups and spoons, and voting materials.

Potluck Details:   Please bring a dish to share. Please label your dish as a meat or vegetarian dish. Please also include an ingredient card. Share a cultural dish or just bring your favorite! PTA will provide plates, utensils and napkins, and bottled water. We are requesting ingredients to insure there are no problems with allergies.

Your children may bring balls to play with on the handball courts. We ask that you do not bring any scooters, skateboards, bikes or pets!    If you have any questions, please email Kristi Schneider at hrespta2@gmail.com. We look forward to seeing you at the Picnic!

JAM’N AT THE RANCH!  Join Tati at Wendy's to raise funds for Highland Ranch Elementary School! Wendy’s has partnered with JAM’N 95.7 to help raise funds for local schools! Get together with family, friends and the DJ’s from JAM’N 95.7 for a night of great food, fun music and fund raising – everybody WINS! Join us for dinner, present your flyer and Wendy’s will donate 50% of the proceeds.  The flyer will be sent home next week!  The Wendy’s is located at 10536 Craftsman Way.  The event is on Friday, September 2nd  from 5:00 to 7:00.  

Transitional Kindergarten

The California Department of Education approved a request from PUSD to waive Education Code Section 37202(a) allowing Transitional Kindergarten (TK) students to attend school for a half day program.  The waiver, # 14-3-2016-W-06, was approved at the July 13, 2016 meeting and is in effect from June 30, 2016 to June 30, 2017.  The rationale behind this request rests on several points:

1.      TK is intended to be the first year of a two year Kindergarten experience.  PUSD believes it is in the best interest of TK students to attend school within the required number of instructional minutes for Kindergarten, which is 180 minutes, of a half day.

2.      TK students participate in an intensive language arts and math curricula aligned to the California State Standards (2010) in ELA and Math.  They also experience instruction in other core areas during this time, as well as support for behavioral, social and emotional development.  This structure ensures that our TK students are fully prepared to meet the academic rigor in the second year of the Kindergarten sequence.

3.      TK teachers in PUSD are fully credentialed educators who provide intervention and enrichment support to other primary classrooms in the afternoon portion of their daily schedule.  This structure collectively reduces class size for our primary students in grades K-2, and ensures high quality teachers are working with students needing additional supports or enrichment.
