College, University Partnership & Credit

The Poway High School Engineering Academy and Pathway has adopted the nationally acclaimed and award winning Project Lead the Way (PLTW) curriculum as it’s foundation.  The PLTW affiliation provides students with a variety of Affiliate College and Universities that are articulated with the program.  As the Engineering Academy is one of 13 certified PLTW programs in the state of California, students can receive college credit at an affiliated college or university (with a cost per unit).  Students will be able to take the national engineering college credit end of the year assessment exam at no cost to earn engineering college credit with a stanine score of 6 or higher, while maintaining a B in the course. If they earn a stanine of 6, that is equivalent to a "C", a 7 is equivalent to a "B" and an 8 or 9 is equivalent to an "A" on the Rochester Institute of Technology transcript. Currently, the PHS Introduction to Engineering Design (IED) course, Principles of Engineering (POE) course and Architectural Design (AD) courses are also articulated with Palomar College, which means that credit is transferable to any university with a “B” grade or better. See the front page for the affiliate partners associated with the Engineering Academy and Pathway. (For more, go to http://www.pltw.org/university-partners)

Rochester Institute of Technology Transferable College Credit to any institution: RIT offers PLTW students the opportunity to receive undergraduate credit for four PLTW courses: Introduction to Engineering Design (IED/ID), Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM), Principles of Engineering (POE), and Civil Engineering & Architecture (CEA). To qualify, students must earn a stanine score of 6 or higher on the PLTW End-of-Course (EoC) assessment (6 equals a C; 7 equals a B; 8 and 9 equal an A), and have a class average of 85% or higher. The PLTW End-of-Course (EoC) assessment(s) are free for students to take. The cost for each course is $225 and each course is worth three semester credits. (For more information, go to https://www.rit.edu/emcs/pltw/students-parents)

44 Colleges/Universities offering College Credit for PLTW courses (More adding each year): (For more information, go to: https://www.pltw.org/experience-pltw/student-opportunities)

Note: All Engineering Academy and Pathway courses are dual College/University enrollment through PLTW for college credit with Rochester Institute of Technology. The foundational courses are also articulated with Palomar College.

Trimester Testing Recommendation: In order to be prepared to pass the PLTW end of the year assessment to receive college credit for each course (like an AP test), it is high recommend that you enroll in a support course as follows:

Foundational Course:
IED 1 [T1] + Intro to Design (ID) [T2-T3]
IED 2 [T1] + POE [T2-T3]

Specialization Courses:
Pre-Eng & Design 1 [T1] + CEA [T2-T3]
Pre-Eng & Design 1 [T1] + CIM [T2-T3]
Pre-Eng & Design 1 [T1] + AP CSP [T2-T3]

Pre-Eng & Design 2 [T1] + EDD [T2-T3]

NEW! AP + PLTW: To help prepare all students for the global workforce, the College Board and Project Lead The Way (PLTW) have partnered on a program to encourage student participation in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) courses and build their interest in STEM degrees and careers. The program leverages the success of the College Board’s Advanced Placement Program (AP) and Project Lead The Way’s applied learning programs. The program has three elements: College and career pathways that connect AP and PLTW courses, recognition for students who participate in the pathways, and recognition for schools, a portfolio of career-focused opportunities for students. More than 1,300 students received the AP + PLTW Student Achievement in its inaugural year. (For more info see https://apstudent.collegeboard.org/exploreap/the-ap-experience/ap-project-lead-the-way, https://www.pltw.org/our-programs/ap-pltw or https://www.apandpltw.org/)

PLTW California Student Scholar Medallions: PLTW California Student Scholar Medallions and Certificates to graduating PLTW High School seniors who have completed 3 or more PLTW High School  courses with a B or better in the PLTW Engineering program (namely IED/ID, POE, CIM, CEA, CSP or EDD). Students that wish to recieve this honor should contact the Engineering Academy/Pathway Coordinator in the beginning of their Senior year.
