Internships

Internships will be managed through the Career Technical Education (CTE), Poway High School counseling, and Engineering Academy Coordinator.  CTE currently offers several internships with Northrop Grumman.  Students completing this internship or any internship with Poway Unified School District in conjunction with enrollment in the PUSD internship program will receive high school credit on their transcript.  Students are responsibile for finding their own internships and they must be completed on their own.

Senior Internship:


Purpose: The purpose of the internship is for students to have the experience working in industry and the opportunity to work directly with professional adults as part of their team. This rich experience is required as part of the Poway High School Engineering Academy.  It is a capstone experience in the academy for students to be successful in the workforce and to help them pursue their engineering career.

Student Responsibility: It is the responsibility of student to find their own internship’s.

Timeframe: They can start their internship during the summer between their junior and senior or during their senior year. It is highly encouraged to complete your internship during the summer so that it does not interfere with school. Internships must be completed by April during the student's senior year.

  • Summer:  June to August
  • Senior School Year:  August to April

Type: Engineering Academy Internships will be Engineering-based careers including:

  • Engineering
  • Computer Science
  • Manufacturing
  • Bio-Tech

Office work such as secretarial or administrative assistance work is not engineering.

Paid or Non-Paid: Internships can be paying or non-paying.

School Credit: There is a possibility of earning school credit:  non-paying. This is not necessary unless desired. Please reach out to Mr. Dohm if interested for the point of conduct.

Eligibility/Requirements:

  • Seniors only
  • Commitment to accept the student as an intern
  • Agreement to intern for at least 60 hours, no more than 4 hours per day
  • 2.0 GPA or higher in all Engineering Academy courses

To begin the process: Please provide the Engineering Academy Coordinator (Mr. Dohm) a company letter on company letterhead declaring that you are in fact interning as described below. Turn the letter into the Engineering Academy Coordinator by June, before school is out.

  • Agreement to have the student intern for at least 60 hours, nor more than 4 hours per day
  • Name of intern mentor or supervisor

  • What engineering based and related tasks the intern will be doing (must be engineering based or related)

Internship: Show up during the times agreed upon by the company mentor. Follow the lead and guidelines set forth by the company mentor. Complete all tasks and meet all benchmark dates set forth by the mentor. Always be on time and complete tasks or deliverables by the due dates.

When completed: Please provide a letter of completion on official company letterhead from the company that you have met the following requirements:

  • The name of the student that has interned
  • The engineering based or related work the intern performed
  • The time frame he interned (date to date)
  • The total hours that the student has completed and how many per day (should be at least 60 hours, nor more than 4 hours per day)
  • Name of intern mentor or supervisor
  • Company name and address he will be interning at and contact person
